VALE Sir Bobby Charlton CBE (1937 – 2023)
VALE Sir Bobby Charlton CBE (1937 – 2023)
Blacktown City FC honours the passing of Bobby Charlton at the age of 86. Widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, he was a member of the England team that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup, the year he also won the Ballon d’Or. Charlton played almost all of his club football at Manchester United, where he became renowned for his attacking instincts, passing abilities from midfield, ferocious long-range shot, fitness, and stamina. Charlton enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968.
Charlton had a connection with Blacktown City FC, having played one game for BCFC on March 9th 1980, scoring a goal in his last ever professional match.
Charlton passed away after a battle with dementia just a week after celebrating his birthday.

LYNCH SELECTED IN FUTSALROOS FOR ASIAN CUP
Futsalroos Head Coach Miles Downie has named a 14-player squad that will represent Australia at the AFC Futsal Asian Cup™ 2024 Qualifiers in October.
The squad featuring some of Australia’s best male Futsal talent will travel to Chinese Taipei for two matches from 7 – 11 October to determine which countries advance to the AFC Futsal Asian Cup™ 2024 to be hosted by Thailand.
A total of 31 teams were drawn into eight groups, where Australia is in Group H with Japan and Hosts Chinese Taipei. To qualify for AFC Futsal Asian Cup ™ 2024, The Futsalroos will need to finish either first or second in their group to advance to the final stage. The action kicks off on Saturday, 7 October when the Futsalroos face Japan at Taipei University Stadium in Taipei City.
Downie has been working hard to galvanise the squad since taking over the head role in 2022 and is looking forward to returning to the international stage.
“The past year has been an exciting period for Australian Futsal and the prospect of competing in the AFC Futsal Asian Cup is something we’re determined to achieve,” Downie said.
“In the lead up to this competition we have been working hard to build a squad who we believe have the skills to compete against the Asian nations and who will form part of the national team for years to come.
“The AFC Futsal Asian Cup qualifiers will be a good test for the squad, and I have full faith that we have the ability to surprise our more experienced opponents.”
On Monday, 9 October, Australia will play host nation, Chinese Taipei, once again at the Taipei University Stadium.
The squad features experienced players from the Futsalroos’ AFF Futsal Championship 2022 campaign in Thailand and the recent PacificAus Sports Futsal Series where Australia hosted the Solomon Islands in a three-match international series in Sydney.
If the Futsalroos are successful in qualifying for the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2024™, the top four teams from the tournament automatically qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup 2024™ in Uzbekistan.

BLACKTOWN COUNCIL PARTNERSHIP
Blacktown City Council has provided a major boost to support Blacktown City FC through a significant new partnership, which will support local youth and female players.
Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said Council is proud to support the strengthening of programs for women and the kickstart of a brand-new program targeting youth, particularly young people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background.
“Council is a long-time supporter of Blacktown City FC, a club with a long, successful history, and a high profile, which continues to do our City proud,” Mayor Bleasdale said.
“Blacktown City’s men’s team were the 2022 NSW NPL premiers and the team did us proud once again this season, finishing third in the NPL.
“We were all excited to see so many of their former players star for Australia at the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup, and the success of the CommBank Matildas in the recent 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup has injected even more excitement into the sport.
“Our Council is committed to bettering the community through sport and ensuring everyone has the chance to get involved in the game they love, regardless of their background or financial situation.
“This partnership lies at the heart of Council’s investment in a broad range of sports, to give residents of all ages and abilities the best chance to be healthy, happy and active.”
Council is building on its partnership with Blacktown City FC to kickstart a game-changing training program for young people through the Momento Grassroots Community Program.
The development program will offer up to 1,000 boys and girls, aged 5 to 11 years of age, the opportunity to train with Blacktown City FC’s 2022 NPL NSW Championship-winning team over 8 weekly clinics.
The program is designed to assist families who might not otherwise be able to afford the fees of Skill Acquisition Programs or a junior NPL team, which can cost around $1500 – $2600 per season.
Participants will receive training gear and a ball, and will also have the chance to receive a scholarship to play in a Blacktown City FC youth team in the 2024 season, free of charge.
Blacktown City FC Executive Chairman Bob Turner said the club was committed to strengthening female participation, from juniors through to an international level.
“Blacktown City has assisted in the development of over 30 Socceroos and the goal in building our women’s program is to quickly find our first Matilda,” Mr Turner said.
“We have only been through two seasons, but the commitment from the club board is to match all aspects of the proven men’s program to attract the best female talent in Blacktown.
“We have a 5-year plan to compete at the NPL 1 level. The support of Council, coupled with their solid backing of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, will drive talent out of the woodwork for Blacktown City to achieve that objective.”
Mr Turner said he was delighted to strengthen the club’s partnership with Council.
“Blacktown City FC has a proven 70-year history as one of the best in the country at developing young players,” he said.
“We are extremely proud of our name and are committed to promote both the club and the City we represent at a state, national and international level.
“The partnership with Blacktown Council is one that will provide benefits to footballers in Blacktown and continue to enhance the City’s reputation as a ‘sporting City’.
“The support of Council will accelerate the Momento Grassroots Community Program and our training initiatives at local schools to take the game to the Blacktown community”.
Blacktown City Council provides a broad range of support to dozens of sporting organisations and clubs in Blacktown City.
“We are sporting City,” said Mayor Bleasdale, “And are always looking at how we can help our sporting clubs deliver for our residents.”

ROUND 26 REVIEW – LEAGUE ONE WOMEN’S
Match of the Round: UNSW FC vs Blacktown City FC
UNSW FC celebrated their Premiership with a 4-0 win over Blacktown City FC at The Village Green on Sunday afternoon.
The students had four different goal scorers in the game which had a celebratory atmosphere after being crowned on Saturday afternoon. Marcella Santos scored from the spot to make it 1-0 at the break then Taylor Galea, Hayley Marshall and Margaux Montegut rounded off the display in the second half.
Blacktown City FC battled hard in what has been a tough but improving campaign for the side in their second year of League One Women’s. Their best chances fell to Jenny Hughes and Rachel Chalhoub in either half.
Both UNSW FC and Blacktown City FC entered The Village Green pitch on a celebratory afternoon for the hosts and with both sides looking to end the season on a high.
The first shot of the game was for the students. Marcella Santos wriggled free from her marker and fired a shot straight at Blacktown City FC keeper Kiara Rochaix.
Blacktown City FC had a chance to respond from the set piece. Rachel Chalhoub floated in a free kick which had to be claimed bravely by UNSW FC keeper Tiahna Robertson.
UNSW FC kept piling on the pressure looking for the opener. Sarah Ferris had a header saved then Hannah Beard’s snapshot went right to Rochaix.
Santos then had a pair of chances to put UNSW FC ahead. Her header from Cassandra Christopher’s cross fizzed wide then her shot went right to Rochaix.
The hosts eventually found the opener in the 40th minute. Santos was fouled in the box and the striker dusted herself off to rocket it home for 1-0 for UNSW FC.
Beard almost doubled the delight for UNSW FC before the break. She glided past defenders before hammering her effort into the side netting.
Coming out of the break, UNSW FC felt just fine. Amanda Levaskevich almost prodded the ball past Rochaix but her effort went straight.
UNSW FC made it 2-0 soon enough. Taylor Galea had the ball break to her and she fired home to make it double delight for the students in the 53rd minute.
Before the celebrations had died down, UNSW FC made it 3-0. A slick move for the students which saw Hayley Marshall tuck the ball home in the 54th minute.
UNSW FC were in party mode and looked to put icing on the cake. They had a series of corners which were sent in dangerously but dealt with by Blacktown City FC.
The students felt like they were in a woodworking class with hitting the woodwork three times in succession. Substitute Hannah Charak hit the post while Margaux Montegut and Hayley Marshall hit the crossbar.
Blacktown City FC tried until the final whistle. Their top scorer Jenny Hughes used her body well to evade the defender and hit one at Robertson.
UNSW FC added a fourth in the 87th minute. Montegut was fouled inside the box and earned the penalty. She dusted herself off to slot it home to make it 4-0.
Speaking post-match, UNSW FC coach Guillermo Rubio was delighted with the effort from the club after their hard work all season:
“We knew we had the job done but wanted to finish it off properly. Four different scorers, it has been a great season for us in both grades. I think it was deserved and we were pushed hard by Mariners throughout the season. I remember when I arrived, we have converted the team since then and proud of the girls commitment.” said Rubio.
For Blacktown City FC coach David O’Keefe, he reflected on the season from his young squad and what needs to be improved for 2024:
“I think it was expected this result. I thought we were competitive in the first half but in the second half they punished us. I don’t think we worked hard enough in the game. We were more competitive this season, played better football and were only outclassed a few times including today. Our main thing was not scoring goals but we’re looking to fix that next year. The whole club is trending in the right direction after the first two years.” said O’Keefe.

ROUND 26 PREVIEW – LEAGUE ONE WOMEN’S
Match of the Round: UNSW FC vs Blacktown City FC, Sunday 3 September, 3pm, The Village Green
Current leaders UNSW FC welcome Blacktown City FC down to The Village Green for their game on Sunday afternoon.
The students inched closer to the title last week after their closely fought 2-1 win over Marconi Stallions at Valentine Sports Park.
Isabella Stinziani has become a super sub for UNSW FC with back-to-back goals and might offer the punch they need late in the game.
UNSW FC know that three points will see them crowned League One Women’s Premiers so they will be ready for the game.
Blacktown City FC were unleashed in their 5-1 win over Inter Lions down at Landen Stadium last weekend.
It was a game that coach David O’Keefe had waited for, Blacktown City FC able to turn their chances into goals in a frustrating season.
A key figure in that was Alyse-May McCutcheon. She found the back of the net twice and continued her strong combination with Jenny Hughes.
This game will be streamed on NPL.TV on Sunday afternoon. Join Pointless winner Eric Subijano behind the microphone for this pivotal clash.
ROUND 25 REVIEW – LEAGUE ONE WOMEN’S

That result was a relief for Blacktown City FC boss David O’Keefe whose side turned around their goalscoring woes this afternoon. Alyse-May McCutcheon put them ahead 2-0 with a pair of goals in the 12th and 41st minute before Riley Dennis pulled one back for Inter Lions late in the half.
Blacktown City FC asserted their dominance in the second with co-captain Rachel Chalhoub making it 3-0 in the 67thminute then Claire Szymoniczek scored her first of the season for 4-0 before Chalhoub doubled her delight in a five-star Blacktown City FC performance.

BLACKTOWN CITY END SEASON ON A HIGH DEFEATING ROCKDALE ILINDEN
Blacktown City finished of the 2023 National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s in style thanks to a hard fought 2-1 victory over Premiership runners-up Rockdale Ilinden at the Ilinden Sports Centre on Sunday.
The hosts took the lead through youngster Ben Wass before Caleb Jackson-Brown equalised and it was City substitute Carlos De Oliviera who netted the winner for Mark Crittenden’s troops.
With much to gain and little to lose, both sides adopted an open and free flowing brand of football not just entertaining but productive and easy on the eye with the emphasis on attacking but ensuring the rear-guard did their job.
Eighteen minutes in and Wass opened the scoring after tenaciously chasing down several lost causes after neatly turning the defence inside the box to slot home.
However Rockdale’s lead lasted barely a minute when Jackson-Brown netted the equaliser. It was terrific work from the visitors who caught Rockdale napping.
Nick O’Brien came close to giving Blacktown the lead when his attempted cross from the right nearly caught Rockdale ‘keeper Harrison Devenish-Meares off guard with the ball creeping agonisingly wide of the top corner and clipping the netting for the visitors.
Jackson-Brown was unlucky to find himself in the book when going in hard against Devenish-Mears in a 50-50 challenge he had to make inside the Ilinden area.
O’Brien then hoisted one over the bar from the edge of the area when falling to him from a right-sided corner before Golden Boot winner and Ilinden captain Alec Urosevski joined Jackson-Brown in the book.
The first-half, fast, frantic and fluent throughout, remained locked at one a-piece as both sides headed to the sheds.
Rockdale came out sharply for the second-half but City are past masters of soaking up any pressure and hitting on the counter.
Mario Shabow broke the Ilinden shackles and set up Travis Major on the left however his shot was uncharacteristically wide of the mark before Jak O’Brien headed over shortly after.
Shabow was next to show his worth but shanked his effort wide of the upright after another dangerous run through the home defence.
It was substitute De Oliviera, on for barely five minutes, who powered City into the lead for the first time in the 68’ minute, not against the run of play as the visitors laid siege to the Ilinden box.
In a pulsating game of football it would be Blacktown City who secured maximum points to retain the status quo and secure third place on the final ladder, not an insignificant achievement but one that had Coach Mark Crittenden happy with his chargers performance.
“I feel we’ve totally dominated the game today,” he said.
“Through a mistake, we didn’t track a runner and they’ve scored at a time when were in control but we came straight back through Caleb (Jackson-Brown) scoring a bomb.
“We had enough chances to win by three, four or five today and with 12-straight wins in this league it speaks for itself.
“We came here and played the Blacktown way and got the result but we’ve been guilty this year of being in leading positions going into the last few minutes and throwing the game away and ultimately that has cost us.
“It’s been a long season but to finish third in this company is an achievement and gives us the building blocks for a stronger campaign in 2024 but for now, we’ll give the lads some time off and get them focussed for next season.”
While Ilinden coach Paul Dee was proud of his team’s performance this year, a position that saw Ilinden finish runners-up to eventual Premiers APIA Leichhardt FC.
“Blacktown City are always a tough team to play regardless of when in the season it is,’ he replied.
“They are the form side in the competition recently with their momentum, but both teams came here to win today.
“Despite today’s result, we are really proud of our boys, and have been for quite some time, and to finish second for such a new side in terms of playing roster is something we can be proud of and build on for next season.
“We’ve been giving young boys a chance this season, as you’ve seen again today, and they’ve done themselves proud so we have to be happy with the way this year has panned out but as with all clubs, we’ll take a few weeks off and look to build on what we’ve accomplished this season and be stronger in 2024.”
It has been a long season, a campaign of highs and lows but 2024 promises to be bigger, better and another roller-coaster we’ll all be wanting to ride.
